Del Norte County Dog Leash Law

The Del Norte County dog leash law governs the unincorporated areas of the county.

Del Norte County Dog Leash Law Text:

Chapter 8, Section 8.02.80 Leash Law

1. It is unlawful for the owner or keeper of a dog to allow such dog to be unleashed or unattended in any public area not designated for unleashed dogs, or on any public road, or any private road to which the dog owner does not have a right of possession.

2. It is unlawful for the owner or keeper of a dog to allow such dog to trespass on private property.

3. Any dog found to be unleashed in violation of this section is subject to immediate seizure and impoundment.

4. A dog that has strayed from but then returned to the private property of his owner or keeper shall not be seized or impounded, but a citation may be issued. If the owner or keeper is not home the dog may be impounded a notice posted pursuant to Government Code Section 53074.

Title 6, § 6.08.010 Control of animals and their waste.

H. Dogs—Leash Required.

1. No person owning or having charge, care, or custody of any dog shall cause, permit or allow the same to be upon any highway, street, lane, alley, court or other public place, or upon any private property or premises other than those of the person owning or having charge, care, or custody of such dog, within the city limits, unless such dog be restrained by a substantial chain or leash and under the general control of the person having charge, care, or custody of the dog. A dog shall not be deemed under the general control of the person having charge, care, or custody of the dog if the dog commits any of the acts described in subsection B of this section.
