Butte County Dog Leash Laws

Dogs are a part of our lives, and they are a prevalent aspect of our society across Butte County and the rest of the United States. We bring our dogs everywhere, socializing them and bonding with them. Every dog owner also understands that we need to give them daily exercise to maintain their health and happiness.

We also need to adhere to local dog leash and running at large laws to keep them and everyone else safe. Below you’ll find a list of incorporated municipalities in Butte County. Butte County Dog Leash Laws

The Butte County dog leash laws govern the unincorporated areas of the county.

Butte County Dogs Running at Large Law Text:

Article I, Section 4-1 – Running at large prohibited.

It shall be unlawful for any person owning, possessing or having the custody or control of a dog, except a service dog, to allow or permit such dog, whether licensed or unlicensed, to be or run in or upon any public or private place or premises within the county other than those of such owner or custodian, except in the following instances:

(a) Upon the private premises of another, by and with the consent of the owner of such private premises;

(b) Upon a public street, sidewalk or way, while under the effective control of a person capable of controlling and who does maintain effective control of such dog at all times, to the end that such dog shall not be allowed to commit any act of nuisance.

Biggs Running at Large Law

Biggs Running at Large Law Text:

Article II, § 5.10.160 Prohibited.

No owner or keeper of a dog shall allow or permit such dog whether licensed or unlicensed to be or run at large within the city of Biggs in or upon any public place or premises, or in or upon any private place or premises other than those of said owner or keeper, except with the consent of the person in charge of said private place or premises unless such dog is securely restrained by a substantial leash, not to exceed six feet in length and is in charge and control of a person competent to keep such dog under effective charge and control. For the purposes of this section any dog in or upon any vehicle shall be deemed to be on the premises of the operator thereof.

Chico Running at Large Law

Chico Running at Large Law Text:

Article III, Section 7.08.110 Running at large prohibited – Leash required.

It shall be unlawful for any person owning, possessing or having the custody or control of a dog to allow or permit such dog, whether licensed or unlicensed, to be or run at large, provided that the term “at large” as defined by Section 7.08.010(I) shall not be deemed to apply where the following circumstances prevail:

A. Where and in an area that has been expressly provided and designated in Bidwell Park by Bidwell Park and Playground commission as an area for exercising dogs, and while a dog is being run or exercised in such defined area under the direction or control of the owner or custodian of such dog;

B. Where a dog is being shown or participating in a dog show for which a permit has been granted by appropriate city authority, and while such dog is being shown and participating under the control of the owner or custodian of such dog;

C. Where and in an area that has been set aside and designated as a dog exercise area elsewhere in the city of Chico by the city council, and a dog is being run or exercised in such area under the control of the owner or custodian of such dog.

Section 7.08.010 Designated.

I. Running at Large. The presence of any dog in or upon any public place, or any private place or premises without the consent of the owner or occupant of such private premises, unless restrained by a leash under the control of a person physically capable of retaining control of said dog, or tethered upon such private premises to a fixture in such manner as not to create a nuisance.

Gridley Dog Leash Law

Gridley Dog Leash Law Text:

Title 6, Section 6.04.150 Prohibited acts.

B. No owner or keeper of a dog or other animal shall allow or permit such dog or other animal, whether licensed or unlicensed, to be or run at large within the city, in or upon any public place or premises, or in or upon any private place or premises other than those of the owner or keeper, except with the consent of the person in charge of the private place or premises, unless such dog or other animal is securely restrained by a substantial leash not to exceed six feet in length and is in charge and control of person competent to keep such dog or other animal under effective charge and control. For the purposes of this section, any dog or other animal in or upon any vehicle shall be deemed to be on the premises of the operator thereof.

Oroville Running at Large Law

Oroville Running at Large Law Text:

Chapter 6, § 6.08.020 Running at large prohibited—Exceptions.

It is unlawful for any person owning, possessing or having the custody or control of a dog to allow or permit such dog, whether licensed or unlicensed, to be or run in or upon any public or private place or premises within the city other than those of the owner or custodian, except in the following instances:

A. Upon the private premises of another, by and with the consent of the owner of such private premises;

B. Upon a public street, sidewalk or way, while under the effective control of a person capable of controlling and who does maintain effective control of such dog at all times, to the end that such dog shall not be allowed to commit any act of nuisance.

Paradise Running at Large Law

Paradise Running at Large Law Text:

Chapter 6.12, Section 6.12.010 – Animals at large.

It is unlawful for any person owning, or having possession, charge, custody or control of any animal, except cats which are not in heat or season, to cause, permit or allow such animal to stray, run, or in any manner be at large upon any public land, or any public place; provided, however, a cat at large should wear, at all times, a tag with the name, address and telephone number of its owner. The term “at large” as defined in Section 6.04.110 shall not be deemed to apply where the following circumstances are present:

A. Where a dog is being shown or participating in a dog show for which a permit has been granted by appropriate town authority, and while such dog is being shown and participating under the control of the owner or custodian of such dog;

B. Where in an area that has been set aside and designated as a dog exercise area in the town by the town council, and a dog is being run or exercised in such area under the control of the owner or custodian.
